HVAC ducts are routinely “blown out” before use on new construction sites before registers & filters are installed.
All sorts of stuff comes flying out.
In a home the returns pick up quite a bit of dust , but usually within reach of a shop vac hose.
Kicked quite a bit loose during a remodeling project as the filters proved.
HVAC buddies say (ones that do not provide the service) that it can be a good idea after a renovation or if you find large clumps of dust on your filters.
One tip I have been using is not to use the super filters but go w/ a standard corrugated filter & change it more frequently than the rating says.

American indians lived for years on the prairie without cleaning their tepee. It’s only with this new STERILE thinking that places have come up with these kinds of ideas. There is no reason on earth to have the ducts cleaned, other than if you are one of them. My home is 80 years old. Should I have them cleaned? I DON’T THINK SO!

If so, pay the money and think you’re better off. Personally, I’d rather eat and heat.

Good quesion, I am thinking about it also.

Lets try this (I have been thinking about it for a while).
Tape a piece of wide, clear, carton sealing tape over a section of the HVAC outlet (say a piece 2″ x 4″). The sticky side will be facing the air flow. After a week, remove the tape and compare with a clean piece. Look at it with a magnifying glass. Of course, the sub-microscopic particles will not be visible. but it may give a clue to what is coming out of the system.

Also, have you always used high efficiency filters, such as Filtrete or equivalent? They are pretty effctive.

I would be in no hurry to hire a duct cleaning company unless there are real symptoms you are aware of.

I have not ever read more ridiculous ads than those placed by Duct Cleaners. Plain outright untruths.

The facts are those ducts are so large a small bit of dust in there does not harm either on cleanliness or on volume of air forced thru.

The fact is after cleaning air ducts, if a particle meter is placed on the output of the duct it reads much higher for at least two weeks than it did before the ducts are cleaned.

Take the money and invest in an Electrostatic Filter for your air handler. That will remove Mold, mildew, viruses, and pollen and 99% of all particulate down to 10 microns.

Plain scam from the scientific and technical standpoint, yet its not been stopped.

Well, depends on how adventurous you are. The pros have stuff that works pretty good, but with some ingenuity and some spirit, you can easily match them. Consider that what you want is to remove the debris which naturally builds up. This may be a chemical mix, some organic residue, maybe just some dust and dirt. So, get yerself a vaccuum set-up. You will need a HEPA filter, hose adapters( which you may have to make yourself), maybe some reducers to get a smaller diameter hose inserted, some duct tape, etc. If you are intrepid enough, you can get a nice job done.You can also push a kind of “fish” thru the ducts, maybe a dust cloth, maybe it’s sprayed with some anti-whatever stuff, and slosh it around in there, grabbing the dust ( and the mites). Common sense can help tremendously here, and it cannot hurt to try, unless you use too much force and separate the duct joints. I say GO FOR IT !

houses today are built airtight so the conditioned air is mostly recirculated. this gives the impurity no were to go. so that is why the ducts need to be cleaned. if you look at the registers you can see the build up of dirt and debris.

Dust mites have become, only a concern, in the
last few years……….. do you have upper respiratory
difficulties?

I am also retired – with budget – but some choices seem
reasonable – considering the risks.
As always = choices and consequences

Having your ducts cleaned will help reduce dust and allergens in your home. I used to think it was a scam too until they cleaned the ducts on a house I was working on that was about 20 years old. The amount of dust, dirt and other “stuff” that they sucked out was stunning. In older homes with forced air systems it can also help with air flow in your ducts.
